England beat New Zealand to qualify for ICC CHampions Trophy Semis

England beat New Zealand by a tense 10-run win at Cardiff to qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy semis.

A target of 170 in a game delayed by five hours and reduced to 24 overs per side appeared well within the Kiwis' reach after England lost their last seven wickets for 28 runs.

But the hosts bowled splendidly, especially with the new ball, to restrict New Zealand to 159-8 despite Kane Williamson's valiant 67 off 54 balls.

A large portion of the credit for England's safe passage must go to Anderson, who claimed two key early wickets and finished with 3-32, while Ravi Bopara - their fifth bowler - numbered the dangerous Brendon McCullum in his haul of 2-26.

Should Sri Lanka beat Australia on Monday, England will qualify as runners-up and meet India in the last four at Cardiff on Thursday.

Tennis Champs: Murray wins Queen's while Federer bags Halle

Andy Murray won his third Aegon Championships title and completed the perfect preparation for Wimbledon with victory over Marin Cilic at Queen's Club.

The Briton's serve was especially impressive as he won the rain-delayed final 5-7 7-5 6-3.

Elsewhere in Halle, Germany, the 2013 'any' title starved Roger Federer finally won over Halle with victory over Russia's Mikhail Youzhny in the final of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany.

It is the first time since 2007 that Federer has come back from a set down in the semis and final to triumph at an ATP World Tour event.

The 31-year-old Swiss won 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-4 to collect the 77th title of his career and a sixth at this tournament.

It may be added that Four of Federer's seven Wimbledon wins have come after triumphs in Halle - so it remains to be seen whether Federer can defend his title at Wimbledon this year or else.

Brazil strips Japan 3-0 in Confederations Cup Opener

The opening match of the Confederations Cup Saturday night turned out to be a one sided show as the host Brazil did not allow their Japanese opponent to come near their goal post.

Neymar celebrates his 3rd minute goal over Japan [Getty Images]
It was 21 years old Neymar who scored the first goal right in the third minute that took the Japanese by surprise - from which they could never recover throughout the remaining game. Neymar scored with a firm shot from outside the penalty area, connecting with the ball after Fred controlled a long cross from Marcelo with his chest. The ball bounced only once before Neymar fired it into the top corner.

It was Paulinho who scored another goal after the half time in the 48th minute to scare away their opponents. However, it was Jo who sealed the Brazilian victory in the 90th minutes third goal.

The win puts Brazil at the top of Group A with three points. Italy and Mexico will play in the other group match on Sunday.

The game was the first international match to use goal-line technology, but it was not needed for any decisions.
