So they meet again at Shanghai Friday afternoon today, far from London Olympics when Andy Murray subdued the Swiss to win a gold medal for his country - starved of any prized win in tennis for almost 73 years.
Federer vs Murray: A semi final to be watched and enjoyed
World no 1 Swiss Roger Federer has a long record of encounters with now world no. 3 British Andy Murray. Both have me seventeen times before today's encounter with a very less margin of edge over each other as Federer has a 8-7 winning edge over the Brit. They last met at London when Murray beat Federer 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 to grab the Olympic gold medal for Britain.
Both federer and Murray have won nine out of ten matches played so far. Federer lost to Berdych in the US OPen, while Murray lost to Raonic at Tokyo recently.
With an age difference of six years, the older Federer has still much steam left in him to challenge the young and aspiring world no 1 Andy Murray, who in the absence of Rafael Nadal has claimed the number three slot in the world ranking recently.
Who is favourite for today's semi final? Well I keep my fingers crossed.
The match is scheduled for Saturday, 13 October 2012 at 12:00 GMT
