Nadal withdraws from US Open

After the Olympics, Nadal also opts out of the US Open - something that he should have been looking for after his ouster from the Wimbledon Grand Slam.

Announcing his decision, the French Open 2012 winner and the USA Open 2010 champion said: “I am very sad to announce I am still not ready to play and have to withdraw from this year’s US Open. I’m sorry but I have to carry on with my recuperation.”

His decision should come as a sigh of relief to London Olympics gold medalist British no.1 Andy Murray, who will now have one rival less to face. He is in high spirits after his Olympic win against world no.1 and seven times Wimbledon winner Swiss Roger Federer and may now dream of playing the US Open finals, and may even win it.
